Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: These data show information from 16 ship-based assessment surveys by the Southwest Fisheries Science Center from 1986-2006. Predicted annual densities were smoothed into a continuous grid of density estimates for the surveyed area. Annual grids were averaged and represent the best estimate of Fin Whale density in Washington over the past 20 years. Fin whales are found in deep, offshore waters of all major oceans. They migrate seasonally but the density of individuals in an area change seasonally and specific migratory paths have not been documented. NOAA's Office of Protected Resources reports approximately 3,279 fin whales are present in the California/Oregon/Washington stock (1996, 2001). Fin whales were listed as an endangered species in 1970 (35 Federal Register 18319).
