snippet: This data exists to support local governments in their efforts to maintain and expand shoreline public access opportunities in Washington's 14 coastal counties. Coastal shorelines are increasingly subject to uses and ownership that restrict the ability of the public to access the water. Currently, only around 30% of Washington's marine shorelines are publicly accessible. Washington's Shoreline Management Act and federally approved Coastal Zone Management Program are key pieces of Washington State legislation that make the creation and protection of shoreline public access a management priority.

description: <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>The Washington State Department of Ecology supports local governments in their efforts to maintain and expand shoreline public access opportunities by developing and maintaining a detailed GIS database of public access locations (point features) along the coastal shorelines. It contains a rich variety of information such as amenities (boat launches, toilets, ADA accessible, etc.) and activities (tidepooling, hiking, shellfishing, etc.) that are available at each access point. The information was collected using a GPS in the field between 2008-2010 and is updated as resources allow. The inventory is available through the Ecology's online Washington Coastal Atlas. This data corresponds with the Marine Shoreline Public Access GIS dataset (linear features) which is maintained by Ecology's Environmental Assistance Program.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
