Layers: Description: Hazardous Waste Facilities used to generate the Washington Tracking Network's Proximity to Hazardous Waste Facility Measure This dataset identifies hazardous waste-generating facilities in Washington State used in the development of the Washington Tracking Network (WTN) indicator for community proximity to hazardous waste sources. The goal of the dataset is to support environmental health analyses and inform public health initiatives by highlighting areas near potential sources of hazardous chemical exposure. The layer includes facilities that reported generating large quantities of federally regulated hazardous waste or state regulated dangerous waste during either the 2022 or 2023 calendar year, as reported to the Washington State Department of Ecology. These facilities are primarily classified as Large Quantity Generators (LQGs) under federal and state hazardous waste regulations. In addition to these regulatory-based identifications, the dataset also includes a limited number of facilities that were brought to attention through community reports of concern over chemical waste and associated risks. Facility data were sourced from the Department of Ecology’s TurboWaste system, the official reporting and tracking platform for hazardous and dangerous waste management in Washington. This list of facilities was last updated on June 30th, 2025. Superfund Cleanup Sites used to generate the Washington Tracking Network's Proximity to Superfund Cleanup Sites Measure This dataset contains Superfund cleanup sites located within or near the borders of Washington State used in the development of the Washington Tracking Network’s measure of community proximity to federal hazardous waste cleanup locations. The goal of the dataset is to support environmental health analyses and inform public health initiatives by highlighting environmental risks associated with long-term contamination and remediation activities. Included in this layer are only those cleanup sites that are either currently listed on or proposed for inclusion on the National Priorities List (NPL)—a designation that marks them as the most serious uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites identified for federal cleanup under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund. Site information is maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Superfund Enterprise Management System (SEMS) and was accessed via the Facility Registry Service (FRS) to ensure up-to-date and authoritative geospatial data. This list of cleanup sites was last updated on June 30th, 2025.
